Madison Park Neighborhood | Seattle
Once upon a time.......there was a forest.........then a single man claimed it as his own.......eventually for motivation unknown, the land was subdivided......and Madison Park was born.
When Madison Street was built from the center of downtown Seattle to the waters of Lake Washington, visitors could more easily access the area and its early attraction as a summer get-a-way destination.
Since the bulk of homes in lower elevation Madison Park were built in the 20s and 30s, this may be evidence that many of the now near shore street locations would have been unbuildable until after 1917 with the completion of the Montlake Cut and Ship Canal Locks, that allowed nine feet of Lake Washington water to drain into Puget Sound.
It took about two months for the lake to fully drop nine feet with two feet draining in the first week, then another two feet over the next three weeks, and the remaining five feet leaving over another month at two inches per day. And now you know............the rest of the story.
Wealthier people in Seattle had a great time in early Madison Park at the beach and enjoying other amusements, and it seems they liked it so much, they began to make it their home. Along with restaurants and services, views and privacy, it soon became a mecca for Seattle old money families and remains so today.
The comfort zone here was to locate the more pleasurable businesses that families patronize right inside the community, without minding some outsider visitation to a part of the residents' enclave. Residents are open and friendly and enjoy socializing at coffee shops and restaurants........more of a European or French attitude of enjoying company and a meal out on the sidewalk.
Why you could be having a sidewalk latte at a table next to Howard Schultz, head of Starbuck's!!
Historical Seattle is a very special saga of risk takers, visionaries, and some very big dreamers. Madison Park is living proof of this............
